Wisdom teeth (third molars) are usually the last teeth to erupt in the jaw, and there is often not enough space for them. As a result, they may remain impacted in the bone, grow sideways, put pressure on a neighboring tooth, or erupt only partially, which can lead to recurring inflammation. Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure in which the wisdom tooth is removed, whether it is a straightforward case or a more complicated extraction involving an impacted tooth. Before the procedure, we always perform an X-ray or 3D CT examination to accurately determine the position of the tooth in relation to the nerve and neighboring teeth and to choose the gentlest approach.
We recommend removal if the wisdom tooth causes pain, recurring [gum inflammation] (pericoronitis), puts pressure on a neighboring tooth, grows at an angle, or is completely impacted in the bone. We also treat cases where there is a risk of a cyst developing around an unerupted tooth or damage to a neighboring tooth.

The extraction is performed under local anesthesia. For more complicated or bilateral extractions, additional methods of reducing discomfort can be used for anxious patients. Before the procedure, we discuss the expected duration of the treatment and what to expect after the anesthesia wears off.
We recommend taking it easy for the rest of the day after the procedure and, in more complicated cases, considering a short period of sick leave. Swelling and mild limited jaw movement are common during the first few days — cooling the area, eating soft foods and getting plenty of rest can help. Avoid smoking, alcohol and strenuous physical activity for several days. If sutures are used, we will arrange an appointment for their removal.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so it is painless. After the anesthesia wears off, some sensitivity and mild swelling are normal and can usually be managed with painkillers.
Swelling usually peaks on the second day after the procedure and gradually subsides within 5–7 days.

In a simpler case, 1–2 days of rest are usually sufficient. For a more complicated extraction, we recommend allowing for several days of recovery.

Possible complications include swelling, temporary sensitivity or minor bleeding. More serious complications are rare with proper planning.
