What is wisdom tooth extraction?

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are usually the last teeth to erupt in the jaw, and there is often not enough space for them. As a result, they may remain impacted in the bone, grow sideways, put pressure on a neighboring tooth, or erupt only partially, which can lead to recurring inflammation. Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure in which the wisdom tooth is removed, whether it is a straightforward case or a more complicated extraction involving an impacted tooth. Before the procedure, we always perform an X-ray or 3D CT examination to accurately determine the position of the tooth in relation to the nerve and neighboring teeth and to choose the gentlest approach.

When is wisdom tooth removal necessary?

We recommend removal if the wisdom tooth causes pain, recurring [gum inflammation] (pericoronitis), puts pressure on a neighboring tooth, grows at an angle, or is completely impacted in the bone. We also treat cases where there is a risk of a cyst developing around an unerupted tooth or damage to a neighboring tooth.

Step by step

Wisdom tooth extraction process

Consultation and 3D diagnostics

X-ray or 3D CT to assess the position of the wisdom tooth in relation to the nerve, neighboring tooth and bone.

Treatment planning

We determine the most appropriate approach based on the complexity of the case and discuss the procedure and anesthesia with the patient.

Surgical removal

Gentle loosening and removal of the tooth, with sutures if required in more complicated cases.

Follow-up and healing

Monitoring the healing process, removing sutures if necessary, and providing aftercare instructions.

Anesthesia and comfort during the procedure

The extraction is performed under local anesthesia. For more complicated or bilateral extractions, additional methods of reducing discomfort can be used for anxious patients. Before the procedure, we discuss the expected duration of the treatment and what to expect after the anesthesia wears off.

Preparation and aftercare

We recommend taking it easy for the rest of the day after the procedure and, in more complicated cases, considering a short period of sick leave. Swelling and mild limited jaw movement are common during the first few days — cooling the area, eating soft foods and getting plenty of rest can help. Avoid smoking, alcohol and strenuous physical activity for several days. If sutures are used, we will arrange an appointment for their removal.

Quality and innovation

  • 3D CT diagnostics – precise information about the position of the tooth and nerve before the procedure
  • Experience with complex cases – impacted and horizontally positioned wisdom teeth
  • Gentle surgical techniques – lower risk of complications and faster healing

FAQ

Is wisdom tooth removal painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so it is painless. After the anesthesia wears off, some sensitivity and mild swelling are normal and can usually be managed with painkillers.

How long does swelling last after the procedure?

Swelling usually peaks on the second day after the procedure and gradually subsides within 5–7 days.

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Not always — only if they cause pain, inflammation, pressure on a neighboring tooth, or are impacted.

How long do I need to take off work after the procedure?

In a simpler case, 1–2 days of rest are usually sufficient. For a more complicated extraction, we recommend allowing for several days of recovery.

Is there a risk of nerve damage during the procedure?

The risk exists in particularly complicated cases, which is why we always perform 3D CT diagnostics to significantly reduce this risk.

How long should I avoid hard foods after the procedure?

We recommend following a soft-food diet for approximately 5–7 days, until the swelling and sensitivity have subsided.

What are the risks of wisdom tooth extraction?

Possible complications include swelling, temporary sensitivity or minor bleeding. More serious complications are rare with proper planning.

How much does wisdom tooth extraction cost?

The price depends on the complexity of the case. You can find the current price list here: price list
